Experimental 3/4 ton 6x6 jeep "MT-TUG" during testing on the beach at the Army Transport Command, Camp Gordon Johnston, Carabelle, Florida on January 15, 1943.

Both Ford and Willys built experimental 6 wheel versions of the G503 with Ford starting in 1941 around the same time as the prototype "jeeps" and Willys following closely behind them. There were 15 MT-TUG's built by Willys under a limited run contract.

The Maintenance Manual for the MT-TUG is actually a supplement to the standard MB manual of the time and dated June 1, 1943. Interestingly, the vehicle is a 3/4 ton truck, as opposed to 1/4 ton rating of a standard jeep.

The MT-TUG was made in a variety of configurations including ambulance, armored vehicle, troop carriers and the towing version, which came with a fifth wheel for hauling a trailer.

Note the Chevrolet G506 1 1/2 ton in the background and what appears to be the nose of a Dodge WC variant protruding from the left edge.

Camp Gordon Johnston (1941-1946) encompassed approximately 165,000 acres and served as an amphibious training base at a time when amphibious duties (as between the Army, Navy and Marines) were still being worked out.
