One of 28 intended to be developed for aid in clearing mine fields in Vietnam, this jeep was the first to be converted and was to be pilot for assembling the other 27. The Vietnamese began using plastic mines and so the project was scrapped. The other 27 jeeps were used for regular service. The odometer registers 27 miles. The boom on the front and the detecting device are made of non-magnetic fiberglass with nylon fasteners. The supporting ball studs on the end of each boom are made of high strength Delrin. When a mine was detected, the jeepÕs clutch was automatically depressed and the brakes applied so the driver could reverse direction. The tricycle set of wheels that level the detector are permanently fixed, that is the detector cannot be raised and lowered, a set of cables inside each boom keeps the boom in a level position. These booms are attached to the detector by a set of ball studs, which allows the two parallel booms to swing from side to side as the jeep moves forward. Tom Boyington assembled this mine sweeper by reading all the brass plaques and using logic to figure out what to do. To the best of knowledge, there is no manual available for this M151 configuration. The only one ever produced and never used.
