1944 German WWII Volkswagen Type 166 "Schwimmwagen"
Genuine VW Schwimmwagen built in June, 1944. 4 cylinder, air-cooled, gas engine, 5 speed transmission, selectable 4x4, independent suspension, fully amphibious with PTO-driven rear prop. This Schwimmwagen was fully restored several years ago by a renowned expert on WWII Volkswagens. It is in correct late war specifications with heavy camouflage, correct Continental tires, dark top, Notek light, smaller headlights with blackout covers, and MG-42 machine gun mount. It is fully functional, drives and swims very well. It has been stored in a climate controlled building and taken to only one or two events a year. It is well maintained and includes many hard to find accessories: Manuals, shovel, paddle, MG tripod, jack, hand crank starter, MG-42 ammo drums and carriers, fuel can, drinking water can, two extra machine gun barrel carriers, rifle mounts, leather map case, tool box, ammo boxes and field pack. Ohio title.
This is a very rare wartime-produced vehicle and represents a unique period in history. Virtually all German vehicles produced during the 1943-1945 period were built in austere conditions and subjected to the constant threat of bombing as well as severe material and labor shortages. Many parts are hand-made. Schwimmwagens were highly prized by elite combat troops for scouting and other special duties, hence all were used in combat. Immediately following the war, most of the remaining examples were destroyed. Very few survive, especially outside of museums. Partial trades considered.
