In this image provided by the U.S. Marine Corps, the famous jeep is supposed to be able to travel over just about any kind of terrain, but when monsoon rains struck New Britain, the resultant muck was too much for this jeep on April 7, 1944. The tremendous downpour put out of service most of the equipment used by both U.S. Marines and the Japanese and hostilities came to a stop while both sides turned to the task of restoring their weapons to usable condition, as the Marines are attempting to do.
